Infographic Launch: Nature Inclusive Design Options for Offshore Wind Farms and Grid Infrastructure
With the support of the VELUX Foundations and BirdLife Europe and Central Asia, OCEaN – North and Baltic Seas is proud to launch a new infographic which highlights different nature inclusive design options for offshore wind farms and electricity grid infrastructure.
OCEaN is committed to investigating and sharing solutions which showcase that the deployment of offshore wind energy and its connected electricity grid infrastructure can be achieved side-by-side with biodiversity protection and enhancement. One area of particular interest is Nature Inclusive Design (NID), where modifications and/or additions to the design of offshore wind turbines and grid infrastructure are pursued with the aim to enhance, either directly or indirectly, biodiversity and ecological functioning. To better visualise measures which are being developed and tested, the Members of OCEaN – North and Baltic Seas are proud to launch a new infographic which showcases NID options ranging from nature-friendly scour protection layer to cable protection layers to add-ons such as fish hotels and biohuts.
Please note that measures displayed in the infographic represent possible options and are not intended to be comprehensive. Their application should be considered on a project-by-project and site-specific basis and accompanied by appropriate ecosystem monitoring to understand their effects on biodiversity. The inclusion of specific measures doesn’t constitute or imply endorsement.
