Webinar Series on Regulatory Landscapes

RGI and OCEaN advocate for an integrated approach to planning offshore wind, grid development, and nature conservation in European seas. This is crucial to achieve a sustainable energy transition. Due to the urgent challenges posed by the energy, climate, and biodiversity crises, it is necessary to understanding the varied approaches of different EU Member States (MSs) in accelerating the planning and permitting of offshore wind and grid, alongside nature protection and restoration.

To address this, OCEaN and the Renewables Grid Initiative organised a new webinar series in 2024 which highlights legal and regulatory frameworks within selected MSs related to offshore wind, grid and nature planning and permitting. The focus will be on understanding how they plan to accelerate and the interconnectedness of their frameworks with other European countries. After each webinar, informative factsheets providing key insights into the topics covered by our expert speakers will be distributed. Browse the whole series below!

Webinar 1: Accelerating offshore wind and nature protection in the Netherlands

Our webinar series kicked off in February 2024 with a deep dive into the Netherlands, where we heard from Dutch experts as they outlined the key policies and regulations that need to be considered in offshore wind and grid deployment and the protection of marine ecosystems.

Experts from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy), NWEA (the Netherlands Wind Energy Association) and the North Sea Foundation outlined the context of offshore grid developments in the Netherlands, policies and regulations which support the inclusion of nature in this process, current challenges, and next steps.

Webinar 2: Accelerating offshore wind and nature protection in Denmark

Our second webinar in September 2024 dove into Denmark's approach to nature-friendly offshore wind and grid deployment, and the supporting policies and regulations which are enabling action.

Speakers from the Danish Energy Agency, Ocean Institute, and Green Power Denmark presented the Danish one-stop-shop concept, which puts the Danish Energy Agency at the heart of offshore wind development in the country, as well as the Danish Marine Conservation Fund, which aims to contribute to marine nature restoration and co-existence between offshore wind farms and nature.
